Facts about the Munac...
Thought to be the oldest species of all the deer. 20-30 million years in evolution and perhaps the most ignored! That is until it arrives on your property!
Originally from India (Muntiacus Reevesi) named after john reeves, an inspector with the east India tea company who first identified it. It was introduced into this country by the incumbent Duke of Bedford circa 1900.
Inevitable accidental and deliberate releases triggered the present day catastrophic infestation, posing a serious threat to our woodland and garden heritage, eating almost any plant and tree seedling within their browse line which in turn impacts on the natural habitat of many species of insect and bird, especially that of the rare nightingale.
Sadly the species consumes much of the food source important to our indigenous deer, perhaps most importantly, annihilating the regeneration system of the forests.
It is sadly still included in English and Welsh deer legislation, resulting in the following restrictions
*Specific rifle calibres
*Specific shotgun gauge and loads
*An offence to trap or transport and release
*No poisons or contraceptive drugs allowed
*No dart euthanasia permitted
The only known, permitted control policy is by lethal shooting with no closed season.
